The difference between ionic and covalent forms of an atom is called the Lewis number, and it's used in calculating the reactivity of a system.In a n ionic form, there is no interaction between the atoms, so the reactivity is calculated differently. A balanced system is more reactive with a covalent atom compared to an ionic one, because an ionic system is somewhat more inert and does not participate in the chemical reactions.

This situation happens most frequently with women who have delayed their career to start and raise a family.  However, this is not the sole domain of women, as I have known of men who have had to take years off for raising a family or caring for aging parents.  If you are in this position of restarting or launching a career in your middle years, I know you are concerned about your prospects.  There are real issues; and some real thought that you have to put into plotting out your career. Here are the issues and solutions for you to consider: Not knowing what you would do.  This is a problem for most people launching a career.  It’s just that now you have a few more considerations in life that you didn’t previously have.  You may have children demands, mortgages and location restrictions to add into the decision. Solution:  Please don’t launch a job search without getting clear about your career.  You will have a muddled mess; you won’t like the results.  Review the next points on the issues you have to consider.  Just know that you have work to do to figure out your career direction; you will need some time and resources to get yourself prepared. Education is dated.  For many people who launch a career following college, there comes a point where the experience outweighs the value of your education.  The experience is more specific, current and relevant.  What you learned in college, while good, has a shelf life.  If you obtained a degree and haven’t amassed much, if any, work experience, you have a job search problem. Solution: Depending on what career you have selected, you will most likely need to go back to school.  I would spend time with a college advisor to discuss the best course of action.  If you are starting a business, this issue goes away.  You don’t need a degree or a “fresh” degree to start a business.  But for most employment, you may be considering, unless pursuing unskilled labor, you will have to bolster your education. Work is dated.  Similar to the education, the relevancy of work gets dated as well.  To help make this point: The general guideline for how much work history you put on a resume is to stop somewhere around 15 years.  If you haven’t been employed for over 10 years, much has changed and is not going to impress prospective employers. It’s almost like not having any experience. Solution:  Volunteer.  I know I sound like a broken record about volunteering, but it’s the one true untapped resource for a job seeker.  There is everything a standard business would have in a non-profit, only they can’t pay for many of those functions.  If you’re willing to speak with a non-profit group about their needs and your career direction, you may find yourself able to learn something new. It will also be immensely helpful to the non-profit group.  This work experience is up to date and good for your resume.  A second solution is to seek temp work doing something in or close to your new career. Restart is hard.  Everyone I have seen in this situation finds it daunting and difficult to shift gears.  It is a change in lifestyle, as well as a personal change.  There is nothing that will go untouched when restarting a career. Solution:  Don’t try to tackle the elephant!  Create a plan for making a decision.  Then execute on those things to arrive at a good career decision.  Next create a preparation plan, whether it is getting another degree, certification, degree refresh or whatever.  This will be the first point where you will start making bigger changes in your life, so list those in your prep plan.  Most likely you will start to have a routine schedule you will need to work around.  Many people facing this change try to wrap their arms around all of the parts at once.  Break your actions down into manageable parts. When faced with restarting a career, the best attitude to take is that you are starting a journey.  There will be many steps along the way, a few curves and bumps, but the scenery will be great.  You will arrive at your new career at a time that is perfect for you. Improving Your Graduate School Application On your application, great test scores and grades speak for themselves, and everyone knows how important those are. But, there are a lot of other factors that can boost your application and ultimately your chances for acceptance. Most grad schools require a transcript, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and admissions essay(s). Make sure you include all these components, or you may be automatically rejected. Transcripts: Its not all about your GPA. Grad schools want to see a challenging undergrad curriculum. So, if you earn a 4.0 with a bunch of easy classes like The History of the Alphabet 101, you will rank lower than a student with a 3.6 GPA from harder classes. Performing well in difficult classes shows grad schools that youre prepared for the next step. But, if youre looking for a number, most schools want to see at least a 3.5 GPA in a difficult curriculum. You wont include your transcript in your application, but you must have your undergrad schools registrar office send it. This can take over two weeks; so try to request it as early as possible. A late transcript could disqualify you. GRE: The GRE is designed to be the one common test among all applicants, making it the easiest comparable factor. But, the GRE may not be as important to grad school admissions as the ACT / SATwere to undergrad admissions. A private tutorcan help you prepare for the entire process. In August 2011, the GRE changed its scoring system (Verbal Reasoning/Quantitative Reasoning are now scored on a 130-170 scale), and its content to better reflect the type of thinking students will need for grad schools. Some schools may even require a GRE Subject Test, which is an additional test in a specific discipline (e.g., psychology). But, if you are pursuing a specific major at grad school or just completed an undergrad major, you should take the corresponding subject test. It will show grad schools that you can specialize in a specific area, and they may place more weight to it than the rest of the GRE. Research: Prior research experience is a significant factor in grad school admissions. It has become so popular among undergrads that if you dont have a strong research project, it will raise red flags. Technically, its not required, but to get into an elite school, it is basically a necessity. Now, its more about the quality of your research project as opposed to simply having one. The best way to create a credible research project is to partner with a professor, start early and commit to it. Some students even seek out companies or other professionals to comment on their research, and others (the ones who really commit to it) get it published. Letter of recommendation: You have to be more than numbers to get into grad school. Admissions will often set cut off points for grades and GRE scores. Then, they will look at your letters of recommendation, essays, etc. Strong letters of recommendation are directly related to your relationships with professors or business contacts. Again, having worked with a professor on a research project can help you earn a much better recommendation. Try to really connect with a professor through a research project and he/she will remember your commitment. If you had a prestigious internship, a letter from your supervisor about your duties and abilities can also be impressive. But, only include letters from professors or supervisors from internships. Also, try to provide your professors/mentors with enough background information on you. That will make their job easier and the letter better. Admission essay (personal statement): Write your essay through your readers eyes. Think about what they want to see from a student and tailor your essay around that. Dont just explain why you want to go to that particular school, but instead write about how the education you will receive there will help you achieve your academic and career goals. Explain why youre a perfect fit for the school, and be as specific as possible write about rewards/honors the school has earned, and what those mean to you as a prospective student. Try to pair your academic accolades or skills with the programs at your prospective school Interview: This is not part of the traditional application, but finalists will likely be asked to do an interview. At that point, the school is prepared to accept you, and the decision may rest on your interview. You may interview with professors, students or admissions counselors. It may be one-on-one or in a group setting. Most interviews will last 30-60 minutes. What grad schools really want to see is a person behind all your test scores and academic accolades. They want to see if youre well-spoken and articulate. But, try not to dominate the interview, and make sure you know everything you can about the school. Maintain a two-way dialogue by asking thoughtful questions. But, you need to convey that you are very interested in the school, and plan to use its programs and education to succeed.

Whether you visit Hangzhou, Sichuan, Tibet, or the Chongqing, once you've paid to travel to China, you'll find that your money goes farther.Make sure you budget for your time in Beijing. (Source: moerschy)It will cost you around £36 per person per day for accommodation, £15 for food (in restaurants), £500 for flights, plus £200 for tickets on high-speed trains if you want to visit the south (Beijing-Xi’an, Xi’an-Shanghai, Shanghai-Guangzhou).  This means, for a fortnight in China, you could be spending around £1,500 per person.As you can see, China isn’t the cheapest country in Asia since it’s economic growth has led to inflation.So how much exactly does visiting Beijing cost?Let's s tart by having a look at flights on sights like Skyscanner, Momondo, etc. You can find return flights for as little as £300.  Don’t forget that accommodation in the very centre of Beijing is quite expensive.  In addition to the cost of flights and accommodation, you’ll need to allocate some of your budget to leisure activities (trips, bars, etc.), tourist activities, and food.The only thing that’s really cheap in Beijing is the food. The capital is effectively an open-air restaurant! If you’re on a modest budget, you’ll want to stay off the beaten path, outside the city centre, expect less comfort, and stay in a private room or in a youth hostel dormitory.  You can find private rooms in a local’s house but these can go for exorbitant prices (between £50- £100 a night for two people).Hotels are more affordable, depending on the comfort, of course. A Day in the Life at The University of Chicago The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. He is a 2013 graduate of The University of Chicago with a Bachelors degree in Political Science. Check out his review of his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jonathan: The University of Chicago is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the South Side of the city of Chicago, about a 10-minute walk away from Lake Michigan. Hyde Park has a sleepy college town vibe with lots of old houses and large trees. The campus itself is rather compact with the medical school, the business school, the law school, and all other academics all within a five minute walk of each other. Because of this, you dont need buses or a bike to get between classes. However, dormitories and off-campus housing are more spread out in the neighborhood, such that the school does provide a comprehensive shuttle system that runs throughout Hyde Park. Enough valuable amenities such as drug stores, grocery stores, and fun restaurants are far enough away that if you dont want to have to rely on the shuttle schedule, it is very convenient to have a bike, and cars provide the luxury of easily accessing downtown at a moments notice since we are remarkably close to Lake Shore Driv e. The campus is very secure considering its location, but nonetheless, there is some local urban crime that does occur on campus and in the neighborhood. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jonathan: Instructor and adviser availability depends on the class and the department. Generally speaking, almost everyone is available and wants to help. However, there are some high profile professors who teach large classes who are much less available. Luckily, they almost always come with TAs who do their best to be there for every student. I never had a class where I felt I did not receive support that I was asking for. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jonathan: Dorm life at Chicago depends greatly on where you end up housing. There are a lot of different dorms on campus in very different locations and with very different cultures. Some of them are apartment-style, some of them exclusively doubles, some of them tiny singles, some of them very close to campus, others rather far. Generally speaking, there is a dorm for everyone on campus, whether you are looking for a wide social circle, night-life, a quiet study space, or an intimate residential community. The dorms are varied enough that if you read the materials provided by the school during the housing process, you should easily be able to determine which dorm is right for you. The dining halls are not great. Food is all you can eat and is not very high quality. However, the food is consistent and amenities like the salad bar, a sandwich station, and a cereal bar are always present and very nice. Students generally lament the meal plans and try to get off them as soon as they are allowed. Food on campus other than dining halls is generally good; there are a lot of nice student-run coffee shops that have prepared meals from local restaurants, as well as one nice food court that has multiple good options. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jonathan: Economics, Political Science, English, Math, and Physics are all programs with a lot of support and representation on campus, Economics being the most popular major. However, almost every area of study has a variety of course listings and programs on campus. I did not encounter anyone at Chicago that felt like their major was neglected. If anything most people found their programs to be rather demanding and to have a variety of options to the point that it could be difficult to know which of a host of good professors one should take a certain class in. I studied Political Science at Chicago because the variety and depth of courses offered let me craft a program of study that was suited directly to my interests. Chicago was very supportive of my desire to take a wide variety of classes and their graduation requirements were designed to allow me to do so. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jonathan: Chicago gets hard for many people as early as their first midterms in their first quarter. Because of this, making friends is easy, but keeping friends is harder as peoples schedules swell up with classes, work, clubs, and internships. Luckily, the student body is diverse enough that it is not hard to find a community that shares your interests. The main thing is to be willing to get involved. Many people at Chicago dont leave much time free to do nothing, so the easiest way to meet people and make friends is to become active in a variety of activities and find the culture that best includes you. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jonathan: There is a lot of recruiting on campus. Every kind of company you can think of recruits during our career fairs and through the school. However, full-time employment does not seem to be the focus of the Career Center; instead, they primarily focus on getting people summer internships, so if you want to get a great job, your best bet is to watch those internship job boards closely and apply to a lot of them. They are all decently competitive but there are so many that you will likely find one you like, and it is those experiences and connections that will give you a better picture of how to get employed. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jonathan: The libraries and dorm lounges are almost universally comfortable, spacious, and easily available. There are tons of students who need to study, but also two giant libraries on campus where they can do so, as well as multiple other lounges and reading rooms on campus and in dorms. Chicago has spent a lot of time and money making sure people are able to study comfortably, and it shows. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jonathan: The local town is pretty basic. There are some nice sandwich shops, some pharmacies, some takeout places, a couple of nice dinner restaurants, etc. Generally, Hyde Park has a lot of basic amenities but it is not very exciting. However, we are on a bus line that connects to the L-train system and the other buses, both of which are easy methods to get to downtown Chicago in about half an hour to 45 minutes. Between the hip North Side neighborhoods and the beautiful and well developed downtown, if there is something you want to do, you can find it in Chicago. You just need to make the time while doing lots of schoolwork, something the majority of Chicago students rarely do. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jonathan: The student body is around 5,000 undergraduates, which is enough that there are always new people to meet, but not so many people that services are clogged up and it is impossible to distinguish yourself. Class sizes are usually less than 20 people, even if they are science or math classes, such that it is possible to get personal attention from incredible and famous professors. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jonathan: I took an English class with 40 other people in which we close-read Lolita for an entire quarter. Our professor, Malynne Sternstein, was incredibly passionate and funny for the duration, and the class developed in to an exciting free-form discussion with an immense amount of participation. There were moments in that class when Malynne really gave her all, emotionally and intellectually, and made us think in ways we never had before.
